Southwark Cathedral
Lay Member of Chapter and Charity Trustee
Role Introduction
For over 1,400 years, Southwark Cathedral has stood at the heart of Christian worship and civic life in London. Situated on the South Bank, amid some of the capital’s most dynamic cultural and commercial institutions, the Cathedral occupies a distinctive position as both a place of prayer and a public presence. As the mother church of the Diocese of Southwark, it serves communities across south London, Kent and Surrey, welcoming thousands of worshippers and visitors each year. Guided by its mission to make space for love, with heart, mind and soul, the Cathedral seeks to reflect faith in action through hospitality, creativity, learning and a deep commitment to social justice, inclusion and engagement with the life of a diverse global city.
The Cathedral Chapter, its governing body, is now seeking to appoint a Lay Member of Chapter. This is a significant voluntary role, combining the statutory responsibilities of a charity trustee with the opportunity to act as a strategic ambassador for the Cathedral’s mission and future. Working alongside the Dean and fellow Chapter members, the Lay Member will contribute to governance, financial stewardship and long-term sustainability, while helping the Chapter remain outward facing and responsive to its context. A particular emphasis of the role is supporting the Cathedral’s approach to fundraising, partnership development and income generation, strengthening external relationships and helping to shape a compelling case for support.
The successful candidate will bring professional insight, sound judgement and a genuine enthusiasm for the Cathedral’s role as both a place of faith and a public institution. They are likely to have strong networks across philanthropic, corporate or cultural spheres and experience of fundraising, partnership development or income generation, ideally within the charity, heritage or cultural sectors. The role is open to a reflective and practising Christian, an active communicant of the Church of England or a church in communion with it. The role is unremunerated and the time commitment is envisaged to be up to two days per month.
