Role Introduction

Millfield School is one of the UK's leading independent co-educational boarding and day schools, set across 200 acres of Somerset countryside in Street, near Glastonbury. Founded in 1935, Millfield has long been a pioneer in education: it was among the first independent schools in the country to be co-educational and the first to successfully support dyslexic students. Today, with over 1,300 students in the senior school and a further 440 at Millfield Prep, the school offers world-leading teaching and coaching in an environment of extraordinary breadth and ambition. Millfield is not like other schools; it never has been. Its purpose is to discover brilliance in every child and to transform lives through education.

Following a period of significant development under the current Headmaster, Gavin Horgan, Millfield is seeking to appoint an outstanding Deputy Head (Pastoral) to join its Senior Leadership Team from January 2027. This is a pivotal role at the heart of one of the most distinctive and dynamic schools in the country. The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will be the Head's key adviser on all matters relating to pastoral care, boarding and student welfare, providing strategic leadership across 19 boarding houses and a richly diverse community of young people from over 40 countries. The role carries genuine authority and scope, and is well-suited to a senior leader who sees their next appointment as a Headship of a great school.

The successful candidate will be a proven senior leader with significant experience in a boarding school environment and a deep commitment to the wellbeing and development of young people. They will bring expertise in safeguarding and child protection, strong strategic thinking, and the interpersonal skills to inspire trust among students, staff and parents alike. A postgraduate qualification in educational leadership is essential, along with a minimum of five years' teaching experience. Above all, they will share Millfield's values: Be Curious, Be Disruptors, Be Brilliant, Be Authentic and Be Kind. The role requires the successful candidate to live on campus.
